Abstract: This course is designed to help practitioners understand the experience of adult ADHD in context. Understanding the ADHD Experience: The course aims to provide participants with insights into the experience of adults with ADHD. This involves delving into the challenges and strengths associated with this condition. Frameworks for Conceptualization: It helps participants identify and apply common frameworks to conceptualize ADHD functions. This includes exploring various perspectives, such as neurobiological, neurocognitive, sociocultural, and popular accounts, to better understand the condition. Experiential Learning: To enhance comprehension, the course incorporates experiential components. These may include using media, engaging in role-play exercises, and employing various strategies to immerse participants in the lived experiences of individuals with ADHD. This hands-on approach can help participants develop a felt sense of what it’s like to have ADHD, and understand the interactions of those frameworks and their consequences on ADHDer functioning. Participants will also learn how to select an appropriate framework based on clients' needs, meeting them where they are at.

Target Audience: The workshop is ideal for beginning practitioners new to the model as well as those already practicing ACT at an intermediate level who want to refresh their repertoire. It is appropriate for all behavioral health professionals, including Psychologists, Licensed Mental Health Counselors, Psychiatrists, Social Workers, and Psychiatric Nurse-Practitioners.

System Requirements: This course will be presented via Zoom teleconferencing software. Participants will not have to install any additional programs on their computer to take part. However, a web browser is necessary. (Mac users are recommended to use the Chrome or Firefox browsers to minimize tech issues). Participants can test their computer's capabilities by clicking here (or visiting http://zoom.us/test).

We recommend all participants test their ability to load Zoom in advance of the event to ensure there are no technical difficulties. All participants must log in via an individual connection, rather than as a group using one machine. A headset/headphones are recommended. A functioning microphone is also MANDATORY to attend this training, to allow for participation in role-play sessions.

Continuing Education Details: Participants are required to attend the entire training. Partial credits cannot be issued. For psychology CE credits, completion of the evaluation is strongly encouraged. There is a 30-day time limit post-training to complete all CE requirements. CE Credit Certificates will be emailed to all completers of the training within 30 days after all course requirements have been completed. CEs are awarded contingent on timely post-event paperwork submission by event organizers.

Learning Objectives:

  2. Utilize clinical behavior analysis to provide individualized intervention for ADHDers.

  3. Match types of intervention (social/cultural, neurocognitive, psychotherapy) to client’s presentation problems based on positive approaches.

About the Presenter: Andrew (Drew) Carr Ph.D is a psychologist at the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System and at Inner Space Psychological Services. His primary clinical interest is working with individuals with co-occurring frontoexecutive and mental health symptoms, such as ADHD, TBI, and post-concussive individuals. He also has a background in working in men’s health, neurobehavior, spirituality, neuropsychological assessment, training and supervision, and coaching. He established Momentum Center for Clinical Excellence, a training program for psychologists in Los Angeles. He also served as director of clinical training at various institutions. He has received advanced training in diverse CBS and CBA psychotherapies and regularly trains and researches in these fields.
